I just came back from the Portrait Society of America conference in Atlanta, GA.  It was my first time attending, and I have to say, it was pretty awesome.  The conference included tons of information, demos by some amazing artists, great deals on art supplies, and an exhibit of the finalists of the competition that included absolute museum-worthy artwork.  If you haven't been before, I would highly recommend going at least once for the experience.  It is truly inspiring - whether you are a portrait painter or not.  Plus, next year it will be held in Orlando, so you could make a vacation out of it!

The above painting is another study in split-complementary colors, and trying to capture the slight translucency of the peppers.

From our hand-me-down collection of vintage brown-drip dinnerware, this little soufflé pot has made it into a few paintings so far.  It's fun and interesting to try to capture the finish.  Love the multi-color peppers too -- to eat and to paint.

Happy Easter!  This painting was done from a photo taken at the Michigan State Fair, back when the fairgrounds were on Woodward in Detroit.  So a few years ago! I just replaced the cage with some indicated grass and wild flowers.

Madame Butterfly

In September, I participated in a group show with 11 other artists called “Inspired by…” in which I had seven portraits.   Madame Butterfly was one of them. We had so much fun with this show, and because the opening went so well, we have decided to do it again next year.  I will try to be more vigilant about getting the information on my blog in a timely manner! 

This painting also made its way into the Northville Art House Small works show and I’m happy to say it won first place!  The show will be up until mid-December if you are in the area and want to check it out.

Well I guess it's time to come out of hibernation now that the weather is starting to warm up and really kick into gear with the painting!  (I know I should have been painting more, not less, but you know how it goes :P)

But I haven't been completely lazy, I have been painting a bit.  And I'm happy to announce that my painting above came in third place in the Village Fine Arts Association's Poetry Art Night.  The poem (written by me:) that accompanied the painting also won third place, so I am pleased and honored.

The show will be up at the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (SHAC) for a month, then it will travel to the Milford Township Library for another month.  The reception is this Saturday, March 11 at the SHAC starting at 6 pm.  There will be food, drinks, art and poetry readings... always a fun night! (P.S. you will have to come to the SHAC to read the poem!)

This painting was done from a photo of a tree that I planted in our front yard several years ago.  It was a seedling sent to us from the Arbor Day Foundation - one of about 10, and the only one that lived (due to user error, I'm sure.)  I'm not sure what kind of tree this is - if it looks familiar to anyone, let me know.
I have always loved berries and leaves, and liked the look of these against the stark overcast November sky.

This is a painting started at my weekly figure painting group, and finished at home.  I am happy with everything except her face.  It is a good likeness, but I just feel like it doesn't have the same painterly quality that the rest of the painting has.  Overall I'm pretty happy with it and have entered it in a local art show.

I have missed a lot of days for the 30 in 30 challenge, and will miss some more I'm sure due to the craziness of life, so I am not going to worry about finishing it, I'll just post when I can.  Possibly I will try again in January.
